Easier access to surgical procedures is coming soon to the Peoria area. Springfield Clinic is proud to be launching the Springfield Clinic Peoria Surgery Center in late 2023, making many outpatient procedures and some procedures that require more recovery time more accessible in Peoria.
“We are excited to be bringing this expansion of services to the Peoria community,” says Peoria Board Member and colon and rectal surgeon Dr. Steven Tsoraides. “A surgery center like this one will offer patients more convenient scheduling, lower cost procedures, and a reduced risk of infection due to a smaller, more controlled environment. We’re also excited to have Springfield Clinic’s first 72-hour recovery center available for patients who need more care or monitoring after procedures. This gives them a more convenient option for surgery compared to staying in a hospital.”
Springfield Clinic has a long history of providing convenient, safe, and comfortable outpatient surgical care. Springfield Clinic’s Surgery Center in Springfield was opened in 1994, and, in 2022, it was ranked #2 in Illinois and named one of America’s Best Ambulatory Surgery Centers by Newsweek. In 2022 alone, more than 24,500 cases were performed, and the overall average infection rate did not exceed .03%. When the Springfield Clinic Peoria Surgery Center opens in late 2023, all Springfield Clinic surgeons in the Peoria area will begin offering procedures in this outpatient setting. Surgical specialties immediately available in Peoria include general surgery, colon and rectal surgery, bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology. Soon after opening, Springfield Clinic surgeons from Springfield will travel to do procedures at this new Surgery Center, offering Peoria patients even more access to in-demand specialties.

“As the former Peoria Surgical Group, now Springfield Clinic Peoria, it has been our goal for years to be able to offer our patients procedures in an outpatient setting like this one,” says general surgeon Dr. David Crawford, who has been a part of the Peoria General Surgery team for 25 years. We’re going to immediately offer those procedures that can be easily and safely done in an outpatient setting and that there is a great need for in our community. I am looking forward to adding the three-day stay to the outpatient experience for our community.”
The building construction will be completed in the fall of 2023, and the first surgical procedures performed by Springfield Clinic surgeons can be expected to be completed in November or December of the same year, after state inspection and review.
Benefits of Outpatient Surgeries
Outpatient surgery centers have demonstrated that patients can receive the same high-quality care and attention they would expect in a hospital, but often at a lower cost and reduced infection risk. Because surgical centers like the Springfield Clinic Peoria Surgery Center are smaller, patients can expect faster discharges from the facility and shorter wait times for appointments and procedures. The comfortable, personalized environment in a more private setting can also improve a patient’s overall experience of the procedure.
With this new surgery center, Springfield Clinic surgeons will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology for enhanced surgical outcomes as well as six licensed beds in a recovery center to accommodate extended-stay patient care needs. This is a new service Springfield Clinic is providing to the Peoria community, as the Springfield Surgery Center currently is not equipped to accommodate any overnight stays after a procedure.
“Many people don’t realize that not all surgical procedures require hospitalization,” says Dr. Tsoraides. “However, in addition to the truly outpatient procedures we will be able to perform at the new Surgery Center, we’re excited to be able to offer some patients the option of staying up to 72 hours in our comfortable, private environment. These are patients who might need observation or additional care immediately following their procedure.”
