The Pharmacy Technician program at Midstate College is up and running with its first students well underway to a good a job and a great career.
Midstate College is so excited about our new Pharmacy Technician diploma program. This diploma program will prepare students for practice as an entry-level pharmacy technician under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Job duties will include answering questions from clients, customers, and physician offices, accepting, filling, and labeling medications, working with insurance and billing, and so much more. The pharmacy technician provides a full range of services to pharmacists, medical personnel, and customers. Employment can be found in multiple clinical settings including hospitals, pharmacies, and stores. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification exam.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of Pharmacy Technicians is expected to grow 20 percent by 2022, which is faster than the average occupational growth rate of 11 percent. This rise in need for pharmacy technicians is due to population aging, higher rates of chronic disease, advances in pharmaceutical research, and an increase in health insurance coverage. Currently the fastest-growing segment of the population is that of the 85 years and older, it is projected that this segment will quadruple in the next 40 years. This population has more medical needs that require pharmaceutical interventions, which increases growth rate in pharmacy technicians. Pharmacists are also taking more of a patient care role leaving technicians to perform some tasks that have been done previously by the pharmacist.
Midstate College offers the unique opportunity to start your education in healthcare by obtaining a diploma degree and then “stacking” that program into a higher degree. The Pharmacy Technician program “stacks” into our Bachelor in Health Service Management degree. This allows students to work in a pharmacy, transfer the credits received to earn the diploma, and still work to attain a higher degree.
Midstate College was established to help train professionals and that is what we continue to do today. Programs are carefully selected and scheduled to meet the needs of our students and the community. Registration for our next quarter is currently ongoing.
