Our February article covered the ins and outs of an MRI. Here is an article that we think will shine some light on one of the questions that gets asked frequently at our center. “What is the difference between MRI and CT?”
MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and CT, or CAT scans (Computerized Axial Tomography) are two common systems used that allow us to see the “insides” of our bodies. CT scanners were first introduced in 1974 and developed by a British engineer, Sir Godfrey Hounsfield and Dr. Alan Cormack. This technology has become a mainstay for diagnosing medical diseases. They were awarded the Nobel Prize in 1979 for their work.
A CT scanner is an X-ray machine that produces cross-sectional images of the body using X-ray and a computer. Imagine our body as a loaf of bread, a CT scanner allows the doctor to view inside our body just as one would look at the inside of a loaf of bread by slicing it in different ways. CTs and MRIs are used to assess the brain, neck, spine, chest, abdomen, pelvis and sinuses. They are more suited for bone injuries, diagnosing lung illnesses, and for major organs like the liver, pancreas, spleen, and so forth. The scan can be done within a hospital or in outpatient offices. CT scans are most commonly utilized in emergency departments because the scan can take fewer than 5 minutes (e.g. CT of the Head) in an emergent medical situation, whereas, an MRI of the head can take up to 30 minutes or more. You never know when you or a loved one will need medical attention in some form. Most all of us will need the help of a doctor or the use of medical equipment at some point throughout our lifetime, so it’s best to educate yourself about medical procedures, and the differences between types of radiology imaging. Being well informed will help you ask good questions and be better prepared when the time comes. Remember, always speak with your health care professional about which imaging study is the right option for you!
