For the over 16 million Americans with cognitive impairments, there is no cure or prescription. Trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions — these impairments can range from mild to severe. While it might seem like a helpless situation, there are treatments producing incredible results.
Lutheran Hillside Village Senior Living Community in Peoria, Illinois features SAIDO Learning, a non-pharmacological treatment to help reverse and reduce the signs and symptoms of dementia. SAIDO Learning focuses on stimulating the frontal cortex of the brain with simple arithmetic, writing, and reading exercises.
“A staff member (called a “supporter”) is trained to work with two residents (called “learners”),” said Jenny Rupp, Director of Regional Sales. “Together they complete brain exercises, not to teach new material, but to engage the learner in the accomplishment of repeated successful exercises, progressing to new material at the learner’s own level and pace.”
The results are incredible. “Some learners were able to resume hobbies or read aloud to their grandchildren,” said Rupp. SAIDO Learning has already been in use at a sister community to Lutheran Hillside Village with great results. “What we’ve experienced through SAIDO already greatly encourages us for the difference it will make in the lives of our residents at Lutheran Hillside Village.”
Lutheran Hillside Village offers a special neighborhood for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive impairments. As a believer in person-centered care, residents are treated with care and compassion. For a personal tour, call 309-689-9605.
