Essential oils have been used for generations for symptoms such as depression and anxiety. As research continues for a cure for Alzheimer’s, caregivers are now also using oils to ease anxiety, boost memory, and improve the mood of loved ones living with dementia.

Essential oils are natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. Each oil is composed of at least 100 different chemical constituents that have nutritional and medicinal value. Using oils offers a natural, healthy alternative over pharmaceuticals when appropriate.

There are three main ways to get oils into ones’ system: aromatically, internally, and topically. Aromas can be powerful. A simple smell can trigger a memory of a person or a place, instantly having the power to evoke emotions and reminiscence. Our emotional health is directly impacted through sensory input from the environment. Our olfactory (smell) system uniquely sends information to our brain from our nose, then linking with the limbic system which is responsible for processing our emotions and memory. For those suffering from dementia, an aroma can be a peaceful experience that triggers a time of remembrance. Lemon is a great oil to add in your water for a refreshing taste and to aid in digestion. Make sure that only pure therapeutic-grade essential oils are used for internal consumption. Oils are absorbed the quickest on the bottom of the feet, behind the ears, and inside the wrist. When directly applying an oil, one to three drops is sufficient. Research shows that, when applied topically, it only takes 26 seconds for an oil to enter the bloodstream and start having a positive impact.

General benefits and facts about essential oils:

  • When diffused, oils may provide air purification by increasing ozone and negative ions in the air, eliminating odors from cooking, bacteria, mold, animals, and other sources, filling the air with a fresh, aromatic scent.
  • Essential oils promote emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing
  • Oils can stimulate blood flow, which increases oxygen and nutrient delivery
  • Essential oils are a powerful antioxidant
  • Essential oils may detoxify cells and blood in the body

In addition to the therapeutic benefits of oils, studies have also shown that the sensory stimulation for people with Alzheimer’s can decrease agitation, improve sleep, and improve the overall quality of life for those living with dementia.

Here is a list of oils that have been shown to be effective in treating different symptoms of dementia:

  • Lavender: Lavender is calming and can balance strong emotions. It has been used to help with depression, anger, and irritability, and can help in some cases of insomnia.
  • Peppermint: Peppermint is an energizer and can be used to stimulate the mind and calm nerves at the same time. Best used in the morning.
  • Rosemary: Rosemary is an uplifting oil used to stimulate the mind and body. It may even improve cognitive performance and mood.
  • Bergamot: Bergamot can be used to relieve anxiety, agitation, mild depression, and stress.
  • Lemon Balm: Lemon balm has been shown to help calm and relax those dealing with anxiety and insomnia, improve memory, and ease indigestion.
  • Ylang Ylang: Ylang Ylang can help ease depression while also promoting good sleep.
  • Ginger: Ginger oil is helpful for those struggling with digestion issues.

As more research continues to be done on both essential oils and Alzheimer’s, it is refreshing to know that there are options in comforting those with dementia.
