We have all become accustomed to working on our computers, iPads, Kindles, and mobile phones. The Internet has enabled us to communicate in ways we never dreamed of and these tools have all made life easier. However, there is a definite downside to everything — even the Internet.

Cyber criminals have found ways to hack into retailer websites like Target, Neiman Marcus, and Michaels. There are also other ways these criminals operate. There are many scams designed to steal your identity and your money. Some of our customers have been victims of scams where a person who you may not know sends an email telling you that you have been selected to receive a significant amount of money, and you are instructed to deposit the money in your account. Next, you are told to wire the money using Western Union to a particular location. You get to keep some of the money in your account, and that sounds fairly easy and you are making money. The problem is that the check you received is no good and when you wire the money out of your account you lose the amount you wired. Please do not become a victim to this scam.

Any attempt to gather your bank account number, social security number, address, or driver’s license number by a person on the phone or via email or text should be avoided. Do not give anyone your personal information. Banks generally do not email or text or phone you for personal information. They spend time and money protecting your information and your money. If you are approached for information, please call your bank and the police.

We are doing our best to protect you from these scams and we want you to be aware so you are not a victim of cyber-crime.

Online banking is secure; however, we encourage you to go online and look at your account every day. You are a key in defending against the cyber-crime.
