“Agony” is what my high school girlfriend called her acne breakouts. The play on words was amusing but the condition is not so funny. Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States afflicting 40–50 million people. Severe acne and the residual scars can permanently affect one’s self-esteem and cause personality changes. This is especially true with acne scarring of the face.
A recent study showed that teens suffer from acne related depression, anxiety, agitation, isolation, and alienation. Interestingly, the psychological impact of acne is not necessarily correlated with its severity. Social, psychological, and emotional problems can be as great as those patients suffering from disabling asthma, epilepsy, diabetes, back pain, and arthritis.
Until recently, multiple laser treatments or other injectables have been used off label to treat acne scars but are limited both in terms of efficacy and longevity. Also, they are hindered by side effects and higher complication rates. Bellafill® is the first U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved dermal filler injectable collagen treatment with PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) microspheres for the correction of moderate to severe, atrophic, distensible facial acne scars on the cheek, in patients over the age of 21 years.
In the world of injectables, Bellafill is distinctive. Bellafill works in two ways:
- Bovine collagen provides immediate volume below pitted acne scars to lift them to the level of the surrounding skin giving a smoother apearance to the skin.
- The PMMA microspheres create a matrix that promotes the body’s own collagen production to stabilize the correction.
Bellafill isn’t just an exceptional treatment option for acne scars.
In September 2015, Suneva Medical Inc. announced that after a five year study, Bellafill is now the only FDA approved dermal filler that has demonstrated safety and effectiveness for up to five years. The study is the largest and longest dermal filler study ever conducted. It involved 1008 patients across the U.S. with no serious adverse events reported. At the five year mark, 83 percent of patients treated with Bellafill were still “satisfied” to “very satisfied” with their results.
Juvederm Voluma® and Restylane® are other popular fillers based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance occurring naturally in the body but not approved to treat acne scarring. The HA’s are biodegradable and may last nine months up to two years compared with Bellafill that lasts over five years. One syringe of Voluma costs about $850. One syringe of Bellafill costs $900. During February it is $800 per syringe at Diamond Medical Spa and Vein.
