When hip pain prevented Davenport native Stacey Cook from enjoying the sports he loved, he turned to Dr. John Hoffman for help. After two outpatient hip replacement procedures, Stacey’s golf game is better than ever!

Davenport native Stacey Cook is a man on the move. With a big smile and easy-going personality, he loves everything sports-related – especially participating.

“Being active is a big part of who I am,” said Stacey, a behavioral-based safety facilitator at Monsanto in Muscatine, Iowa.  “I’ll jump into just about any sports activity. I’ve played football, basketball and golf. I’ve even done some gymnastics!”

In 2012 the pain started to affect Stacey’s ability to stay active. He experienced aches while doing simple things like taking an evening stroll. Even sitting in his car during his morning and evening commute was uncomfortable.

“In particular, I felt pain in the joints around my hips. When the pain first started, I was in my early 40s. I wrote it off to just getting older, but eventually I realized it was more. I wasn’t willing to sit on the sidelines just yet. I needed to do something to get back to the active life I loved,” said Stacey.

The first person Stacey consulted about the pain was his father, who also suffered from hip pain.

“My father had one of his hips replaced … and told me to get an appointment with him right away,” said Stacey.

After a thorough exam, it was confirmed Stacey needed not one — but two — hip replacement surgeries. The doctor recommended rapid recovery total hip replacements that is done in an outpatient setting.

Rapid Recovery Outpatient Total Hip Replacement
Rapid Recovery Outpatient Total Hip Replacement surgery is a new approach to traditional hip replacement surgery. The minimally invasive surgery takes place on an outpatient basis and is performed with a small video camera that is inserted into a tiny incision, approximately 2 ½ inches long.

“Along with the doctor, the entire staff at the surgery center where I had my surgeries made me feel at ease,” Stacey recalled. “Because it was outpatient, I was at home resting in my own bed in less than a day.”

Back to the life he loves with a speedy recovery
According to Stacey, the best part of the experience was how quickly the recovery process started.

“I was up on my feet and moving around within a few hours after each surgery,” he said. “The staff helped me understand how to manage my recovery and made me feel confident that everything was going to be okay. I really appreciated that.”

Today, Stacey is back to his favorite sports.

“I’ve always enjoyed golfing, and I’m playing as much as I can,” said Stacey. “When I do golf, I’m walking instead of using a cart. I am increasing my movement and activity day after day. I feel better than ever!”
