Specialists in orthopaedic medicine and surgery can do amazing things to help people feel brand new. That’s because breakthroughs in surgical techniques, equipment, and facilities continue to advance the field.

Orthopaedic Specialists (OS), located at 3385 Dexter Court in Davenport, is more than keeping pace with advancements — they are leaders when it comes to reinvesting and expanding services and expertise to assure the best possible outcomes.

The team at OS never settles for the status quo. This goes back to the fellowship training of their physicians. They have honed their skills with additional education in subspecialized fields. In fact, they are the only group of all fellowship-trained orthopaedic specialists in the Quad Cities.

Team building
From the start, OS envisioned a team that collectively covered all specialties of orthopaedics — from head to toe. We have a unique team of orthopaedic specialists including five surgeons dedicated to providing cutting-edge care:

Tyson Cobb, MD: an expert in minimally invasive surgery of the upper extremities.
Very little could be more specialized than chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS), which is common among competitive motocross riders. Riders call it “arm pump.” It’s a muscle and nerve condition that develops in a rider’s forearms, reducing the ability to brake, shift, and control their bike.

The surgery to correct it? Yep, arm pump surgery. It typically involves fasciotomy, which opens up the fascia (the tissue that surrounds each muscle compartment) to reduce pressure on the muscles and nerves.

Dr. Cobb is a pioneer in arm pump surgery and has dedicated his career to becoming one of the world’s experts on minimally invasive surgery of the upper extremity. In fact, he holds several patents, has developed and published several techniques, and instructs surgeons around the world in the use of minimally invasive arthroscopic and endoscopic orthopaedic surgery techniques.

Michael Dolphin, DO: the first to bring minimally invasive, outpatient spine surgery to the Quad Cities.
When local businesswoman Angie Nichols had severe headaches as well as neck and shoulder pain, she went to a chiropractor, a massage therapist, an acupuncturist, and a physical therapist. It turned out the specialist she needed was Dr. Michael Dolphin.
As the leader of the Spine Center at OS, Dr. Dolphin was the first to bring minimally invasive spine surgery to the Quad Cities — and perform it in an outpatient setting. He has developed protocols that allow for rapid recovery and less pain.

Upon examining Angie, Dr. Dolphin determined she suffered from spinal stenosis and required Anterior Cervical Discectomy with Fusion (ACDF). This procedure removes the bone spurs causing spinal stenosis, relieving the spinal/nerve compression.

The outpatient surgery was a success, and soon Angie was back to a pain-free life.

“Dr. Dolphin genuinely cares about his patients,” remarked Angie. “He makes you feel at ease. Very importantly, he educates you and includes you in the decision-making process.”

John Hoffman, MD: a leader in total joint replacements.
Quad-City athlete Joe Hesse has tossed kegs, flipped cars, lifted enormous rocks, and performed many other tests of brute strength and stamina in Strongman competitions. While Strongman competitions are a battle of mind over matter, it became a battle of mind over hip for
Joe when he began to experience significant hip pain at a competition.

Soon, he was experiencing discomfort from simply walking. Joe wanted the best medical care, and he was referred to Dr. Hoffman at OS.
After a thorough examination, Dr. Hoffman determined Joe required a total hip replacement.

Dr. Hoffman performed a minimally invasive, rapid-recovery surgery that took only 60 minutes. “I was worried it would be a long recovery time and it would be pretty extreme,” said Joe. “All my worries quickly went away. I was walking around with the help of staff a few hours after surgery. I was mobile with the use of a walker after a few days. Within a week, I was walking on my own.”

Dr. Hoffman has made a lifetime commitment to total joint replacement and the significant benefits of minimally invasive outpatient surgery. As a national expert, he continually educates other surgeons on how to implement this unique program. Dr. Hoffman performs over 500 total joint replacements every year and has completed over 1,500 ACL (knee ligament) reconstructions in his career.

Tuvi Mendel, MD: a specialist in reconstructive and sports-related injuries of the foot, ankle, knee, and shoulder.
It seems almost every athlete has his or her own “Achilles’ heel” — an area of weakness. For Quad-City professional triathlete Jeff Paul, his “Achilles’ heel” was actually his Achilles’ heel. While putting in 36-hour training weeks, Jeff was feeling severe pain radiating from the bottom and back of his foot.

Luckily, he found an orthopaedic doctor trained in sports-related injuries — Dr. Tuvi Mendel. In the case of Jeff Paul, Dr. Mendel first tried non-surgical treatments. When those weren’t enough to get the athlete back to his prime, he recommended a minimally invasive arthroscopic procedure to repair the tendon. During the surgery, an arthroscope, a small surgical tool equipped with a tiny video camera and light, displayed large images of Jeff’s joint on a video screen for better, more detailed visualization. Because of the small size of the arthroscope, only a small incision was needed. Jeff returned to his triathlon training in six months.

Ryan Pokorney, MD: the revision joint replacement expert.
There are specialists for joint replacement, and then there are the rare few who specialize even further in revision joint replacement — which occurs when surgery is done to replace a worn out joint replacement. Enter the newest surgeon at OS — Dr. Ryan Pokorney.
“Most joint replacements last for many years, but there are many factors that can lead to their need to be replaced,” said Dr. Pokorney. For example, loosening of the implant, infection, or simply a lot of use through physical activity can all contribute to the need for a replacement. A revision joint can help people regain their mobility once again.”

Dr. Pokorney also contributes specialized training in hip replacements. He is well versed in minimally invasive techniques, including hip arthroscopy.

“Like other forms of arthroscopy, hip arthroscopy is performed through small incisions using a camera to see the inside of a joint,” said Dr. Pokorney. “A camera is inserted into one incision, and small instruments through the other incision. This enhances both diagnosis and treatment of hip issues.”

Investing in facilities and equipment
Having the best specialists isn’t enough. OS recently invested even more in their facility by doubling the size of their Dexter Court location. They added exam rooms, a casting room, and an additional radiology center. They also expanded and redecorated the waiting room.
“The patient experience starts the second someone walks in,” said Jennifer Reagan, Practice Administrator at OS. “We want people to know that their comfort and entire experience is our number-one priority.”

Just as important, OS has implemented a highly advanced electronic medical record (EMR) system that streamlines patient information.

Doctors, nurses, and staff can quickly access patient information such as MRIs, add important notes such as patient progress, and do much more — anytime, anywhere.

Why do their specialists pursue exemplary educational experience? Why do they continually build upon their facilities or streamline processes? It’s all about enhancing the patient’s entire experience — from outcomes, to comfort, to personalized attention where you don’t feel like you’re just a number. That makes OS a better experience, with better results.
