All-American Heptathlete Cole Connell, 20, a St. Ambrose University Fighting Bee sophomore, is pursuing his dream to become a champion on the podium, despite debilitating shin injuries that threatened to derail his promising track career. Cole’s world-class dreams take world-class injury treatment, and he has found a winning team of orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists who are supervising his recovery at ORA Orthopedics’ new 30,000-square-foot clinic in northwest Davenport. “I’ve been running on the new underwater treadmill at the clinic,” says Cole. “It’s amazing! Not only is the water taking the pressure off my joints so my shins can heal, but the powerful jets provide enough resistance to keep me strong. I am also able to improve my running form in real time with the underwater cameras. It’s really cool!”
Leading orthopedic care in the Quad City area
ORA’s new clinic, located at Northwest Boulevard and Division, was built so that ORA’s orthopedic physicians and physical therapy team can work together to better treat and supervise each patient’s unique recovery plan — all under one roof. The location replaces the outdated and cramped Lombard clinic.
“We built the new clinic to better serve Quad City patients, especially those in the north and western portions of Scott County,” explains Ken Brockman, CEO. “Our patients deserve the best diagnostic, orthopedic treatment, and physical therapy resources available in one convenient location — this new clinic accomplishes that.”
ORA Sports Medicine physician, Dr. Andrew Bries, is supervising Cole’s treatment to ensure the track star’s shin pain doesn’t progress to stress fractures. Dr. Bries says he can better supervise Cole’s training regimen because ORA’s state-of-the-art physical therapy center, which is powered by Rock Valley Physical Therapy, directly connects to the physician clinic. “I can meet with both Cole and his physical therapist, Becky Burke, and we can monitor his aquatic therapy together. It’s the gold standard for sports medicine orthopedic care.”
Mr. Brockman adds, “The clinic features the latest technology and treatment available and will serve over 4,000 patient visits a month.” Investments include a new MRI and digital radiography equipment that provides enhanced diagnostic capability, spacious casting and exam rooms, and a 10,000-square-foot physical therapy space that not only features the therapy pool and gym, but also a pitching mound for rehabilitating baseball and softball players as well as those athletes who desire to improve their performance.
To enhance the patient experience, the clinic also houses The Atomic Coffee Shop, which will be available for both patients and local patrons alike.
ORA expands services and locations
The Davenport clinic is the jewel in a crown of a number of ORA growth initiatives this past year. ORA has expanded its Hand Center of Excellence, hiring Drs. Tobias Mann and Justin Munns as new fellowship-trained hand and elbow surgeons to better serve the increasing demand for hand, wrist, and elbow treatment.
ORA also recently established its Pain Center of Excellence to provide state-of-the-art pain management procedures and help those suffering from neck and back pain. ORA’s board-certified pain management physician, Dr. Mahesh Mohan, leads the new Pain Center of Excellence. “We want to provide a continuum of care for chronic pain sufferers who may not be ready, able, or even need surgery,” explains Dr. Mohan. “There are many effective pain-relief tools, such as facet joint injections, epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks, and spinal cord stimulation available to our patients.”
In 2017, ORA also opened a new clinic in Muscatine to better serve residents in Muscatine County and nearby communities. “ORA has been a vital part of the Quad City region for more than a half century. Our new clinics, expanded treatment options, and specialty-trained orthopedic physicians, staff, and physical therapists all demonstrate our continued commitment to provide the best, most effective, and compassionate care for our patients,” adds Michael Pyevich, MD, President.
It’s care that makes a difference to the tens of thousands of patients ORA treats each year. Just ask Cole Connell. “When I placed fourth at nationals and hobbled to the podium with my shin injuries, my stepfather said to me, ‘Cole just look what you have accomplished in pain. Imagine what you can when you are healthy next year!’”
For injuries such as broken bones, strains and sprains, sports or work-related injuries, ORA offers Urgent OrthoCARE, the only after-hours
