Recently, a woman called Good Samaritan Society Services@Home for assistance. Her grandfather, Samuel, wanted to attend his granddaughter’s wedding in Clinton, Iowa but needed someone to assist him when he arrived.

The Good Samaritan Services@Home office promptly mailed the paperwork to the family so it could be completed beforehand. When Samuel arrived, our Services@Home caregiver met him at the hotel, provided assistance to Samuel for the wedding, and accompanied him to the ceremony and reception. When Samuel was ready to return to the hotel our caregiver provided the necessary assistance to him, until his family was able to return. His family was able to continue their evening without worry, and Samuel did not have to miss his granddaughter’s big day.

“It was such a blessing and privilege that we were able to help this family in such an important event in their lives,” explains Ron Calvert, Good Samaritan Society Services@Home Director. “This is just a small scope in the different services we can provide to families.”

The mission of The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society is “to share God’s love in word and deed by providing shelter and supportive services to older persons and others in need, believing that ‘In Christ’s Love, Everyone Is Someone.’” When Good Samaritan Services@Home was looking to provide home care services in the Quad Cities, they found a similar mission in Guardian Family Care. So similar, in fact, that The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society decided to purchase Guardian Family Care last fall.

“This has been an incredible opportunity for Good Samaritan Society to continue to grow and expand services to our seniors in the Quad City and surrounding areas,” states Calvert.

Good Samaritan has more than 240 facilities nationwide, including the Quad City region. In addition to home care they also offer skilled nursing, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services, assisted living, senior living, affordable housing, home health, hospice, and memory care services throughout Iowa. The acquisition of Guardian Family Care complements the strong service offerings and reputation already provided in the Quad Cities area by the Good Samaritan Society. Calvert notes, “Our expanded coverage in services makes us one of the leaders in the Quad Cities for providing care to seniors.”

With the acquisition of Guardian Family Care we have expanded our services beyond the Quad Cities by establishing five offices in the following locations: Bettendorf, Muscatine, Clinton, Moline, and Geneseo.

The goal of Good Samaritan Society Services@Home is to provide a variety of care solutions that will enable an elderly person to maintain a sense of independence and to remain in familiar, common surroundings, thereby keeping their enthusiasm for life. This contributes greatly toward a feeling of well-being, self-worth, and fulfillment. In addition to providing the highest degree of independence possible for a person, our services are designed to reduce the family’s burden and stress of caregiving, so that the time spent together is quality time. An elder companion is a solution that not only meets the needs to the care recipient, but the care providers as well.

For nearly 90 years, the Good Samaritan Society has thrived based on a model that emphasized skilled nursing care. The demographics of the baby boomer generation, however, suggest that this model will continue to be challenged by seniors’ preferences to live independently and to focus their attention on personal health and well-being. In short, the Society — through an intentional effort — has to consider how to best position itself for its next 90 years. The Society has to consider how to be the identified leader in senior care and services and further hone its work on becoming a national leader in advocacy for seniors and their families. “Home Care is a very important option in regards to the aging population,” states Calvert. “Good Samaritan Society Services@Home is dedicated to being the leader in providing exceptional care to our clients.”

The best opportunity for growing the Society is in building new products and services that engage people earlier in their lives, create dedicated consumers, and share God’s love in word and deed with as many people as possible. It needs to do so through a cultural shift toward innovation and to well-being, independence, and health for seniors.
