Varicose veins are not always visible to the naked eye. You may not have the ropey, twisted veins on your legs, but may have pain, swelling, redness, and other symptoms often seen with varicose veins. Patients who may have varicose veins should be diagnosed using duplex ultrasound to check the blood flow in the leg veins. Duplex ultrasound is now the gold standard for assessing blood flow in the leg veins of patients with suspected varicose veins.

In this test, traditional ultrasound is combined with Doppler ultrasound to see both the veins and the movement of blood through the veins. The test is simple, painless, and takes only a few minutes. A technician passes a small handheld device back and forth over your legs. The ultrasound image is projected on a video monitor for the physician to see. That image can be captured and made a part of your medical record. The results of the test allow your doctor to see exactly where the malfunctioning valves are located to effectively and efficiently plan your varicose vein treatment.
