Summer is a time for relaxing routines, family gatherings, vacations, and enjoying favorite seasonal treats. But while you’re soaking up the sunshine, your dental health can quietly take a hit. Changes in diet, hydration, and daily habits can increase the risk of cavities, sensitivity, and gum issues. However, a few simple adjustments can help protect your smile all summer long.
Here are five common summer habits that can harm your teeth—and how to fix them.
- Sipping Sugary and Acidic Drinks All Day
From lemonade and sweet tea to soda and sports drinks, summer beverages are often loaded with sugar and acid. Sipping them throughout the day continuously bathes your teeth in substances that weaken enamel and feed cavity-causing bacteria.
Fix it:
Limit sugary drinks and opt for water whenever possible. If you do indulge, try to drink it in one sitting rather than sipping over hours. Using a straw can also help reduce contact with your teeth, and rinsing your mouth with water afterward can minimize damage.
- Frequent Snacking on Sticky Treats
Summer often means more snacking—think popsicles, gummy candies, and caramel treats. These foods tend to stick to teeth, allowing sugar to linger longer and increasing the risk of decay.
Fix it:
Choose tooth-friendly snacks like fresh fruits, vegetables, cheese, and nuts. If you do enjoy sticky treats, follow them with water and brush when you can. Keeping consistent brushing and flossing habits is especially important during snack-heavy days.
- Dehydration and Dry Mouth
Hot weather, outdoor activities, and travel can lead to dehydration. When your body is low on fluids, saliva production decreases. Since saliva helps wash away bacteria and neutralize acids, a dry mouth can increase your risk of cavities and bad breath.
Fix it:
Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. Chewing sugar-free gum can also help stimulate saliva production. Be especially mindful if you’re spending long hours outdoors or exercising.
- Skipping Your Routine While Traveling
Vacations and busy summer schedules can disrupt even the best routines. Late nights, early mornings, and long travel days make it easy to skip brushing or forget to floss.
Fix it:
Pack a small dental kit with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to keep with you. Set reminders if needed, and try to stick to brushing twice a day no matter where you are. Consistency is key to preventing problems.
- Chewing Ice
On a hot day, chewing ice might feel refreshing—but it can be tough on your teeth. Ice is hard enough to chip enamel, crack teeth, or damage dental work like fillings and crowns.
Fix it:
Skip the ice chewing and let it melt instead. If you like the crunch, consider safer alternatives like chilled fruits or crunchy vegetables.
Enjoy Summer—Without Sacrificing Your Smile
Summer should be about fun, not dental problems. By being mindful of these common habits and making a few simple changes, you can protect your teeth while still enjoying everything the season has to offer.
If it’s been a while since your last dental visit, summer is also a great time to schedule a checkup. A healthy smile will help you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to make the most of the season.
