What makes you proud to call the Quad Cities home?

For years, many people have found pride in the friendly people and unique places that make up our communities along the winding Mississippi. Now, for a growing number of people, it’s pride in the quality of life they find here.

A critical element to a high quality of life: modern healthcare. Mississippi Valley Surgery Center, located at 3400 Dexter Court, Suite 200 in Davenport, Iowa, has been a state-of-the-art outpatient facility at the forefront of minimally invasive procedures since 1996. Since opening its doors, the physicians that trust MVSC for their outpatient surgeries, with their teams, have performed more than 220,000 outpatient surgeries—gaining the confidence of patients through dedication and expertise.

In 2020, the Surgery Center crossed another important milestone—earning the title of Iowa’s first and only AAAHC Advanced Orthopaedic Certified surgery center.

Accreditation through dedication
To become the first and only ambulatory surgery center in Iowa awarded the Advanced Orthopaedic Certification from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthy Care (AAAHC), MVSC underwent an extensive assessment and onsite survey by AAAHC expert surveyors who are actively involved in orthopaedic care. This process took more than one year to complete.

“Truly, only the best of the best in the nation meet the high standards for the accreditation,” said Michael Patterson, president and CEO of Mississippi Valley Surgery Center and Mississippi Valley Endoscopy Center. “Achieving this advanced certification for joint replacement and spine procedures is the result of our team’s pursuit of innovation and top-notch patient care.”

Effective leadership and integrated care were also a consideration in the certification process. The Surgery Center was evaluated on strategic planning, quality and safety. Providers and personnel were also examined as no detail of the surgical experience was overlooked.

MVSC’s Dr. John Hoffman, medical director of the Total Joint Program; Dr. Michael Dolphin, medical director of the Spine Program; and Dr. Tuvi Mendel, orthopaedics board chairman, are a few of the leaders that have played vital roles in developing clinical pathways and protocols to ensure successful patient outcomes.

“MVSC and our physician partners implemented advanced techniques in outpatient orthopaedic care over a decade ago,” said Dr. Mendel. “We are very proud of the outcomes we have achieved and the cost savings to the patients and healthcare system we have recognized during that time.”

Backed by proud patients
To receive any AAAHC certification, community engagement and patient feedback from the start of care to its completion was taken into consideration.

The feedback received was outstanding. When patients who experienced the Surgery Center in 2019 were asked, “Would you recommend MVSC to your family and friends?” over 94 percent answered, “Yes!”  That means MVSC scored above the national average.

What does it take to reach that level of excellence in patient satisfaction?

According to Missy Soliz, MVSC quality and risk manager, it’s all about having open lines of communication between patients and physicians as well as processes established to make sure the experience is as seamless as possible and patient safety is at the forefront.

“We have programs in place to physically and emotionally prepare patients for what’s to come,” Missy said. “It includes everything they need to know about their respective surgery including items to do in advance, what to expect day-of, what typically occurs during recovery and how to be prepared when they arrive home. We’re with them every step of the way.”

Putting modernization on the map
AAAHC Certification and patient satisfaction ratings soaring over 90 percent doesn’t happen overnight. MVSC has been pushing the limit of innovation since its inception. Most recently, the Surgery Center finished a $9-million modernization project to its facility.

The modernization project increased square footage, ensuring every patient has the comfort and privacy of their own private room. Now, each room is designed specifically for those undergoing outpatient surgery.

The Surgery Center’s modernization project allows each patient a family-friendly private space and reflects an intentional effort to provide top-notch amenities with the best care possible. Doctors, nurses and support staff were instrumental in the design and development of the updated facility plan, resulting in a patient experience that meets or exceeds expectations.

While MVSC will always be focused on innovation and improvement, one thing will never change: patient-centered care and service.

“After 24 years of providing healthcare and innovative surgical care, we’re constantly pushing ahead,” said Michael Patterson, CEO. “Providing excellence in care and service has always been our mission. We are focused on continuing that legacy and can’t wait to see more outpatient innovations in the years to come.”
