For many people, looking good is as important as feeling good. And while they often do go hand in hand, they don’t always. Some people, no matter how diligent they are about exercising regularly and eating right, just can’t lose the extra fat.
And when it comes to wrinkles or a slightly sagging face, Mother Nature doesn’t discriminate. Over time, gravity is a powerful force.
Dr. Lara Otaigbe understands the plight of those who want to look their best as well as feel their best. Dr. Otaigbe serves as a family practitioner specializing in the treatment of diabetes, but she also owns and operates Radiant Reflections in Hattiesburg.
Radiant Reflections offers a complete menu of services that can help people erase the marks of time. These services include the Vampire Facelift (not scary like it sounds), the latest technology for injections such as Botox and other fillers, and even CoolSculpting® — a new, non-invasive procedure that’s sweeping the nation. It has become a popular alternative to liposuction.
“Some people look at these procedures and say, ‘That’s just vanity,’” Dr. Otaigbe said. “Well, if you feel good about how you look, you’re more likely to be confident. You may go after a job you otherwise may have not gone after. If you feel good, you walk in there with your shoulders and your head up high, and that comes across. Looking good is about more than vanity.”
And these procedures may be more affordable than you think, Dr. Otaigbe said. She said Radiant Reflections will attempt to work with their clients to better achieve their goal of looking better.
CoolSculpting Gets a Stamp of Approval From Medical Journal
Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting uses technology that freezes fat cells without ever having to pierce your skin. Instead of sucking out the fat, like with liposuction, the cells die off and you pass them naturally.
In this month’s Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Dr. Chase Derrick reports on a thorough review of previously published research about the procedure, also known as cryolipolysis. In less than four months, an average of 20 percent of the fat in the affected area had disappeared. Out of 1,445 patients, only 12 reported complications, primarily a reduced sensation.
Dr. Otaigbe said some people may realize even better results than a 20 percent fat reduction. She noted any discomfort is rare and usually short-term, easily treatable with a medication called Neurontin®. Neurontin is not an opiate pain medication, but rather an analgesic that helps turn off nerve receptors.
“It can be more uncomfortable than anything else,” Dr. Otaigbe said of the rare side effects patients may report after CoolSculpting. “It’s from the nerves waking up.” Usually, the side effects pass a week after having the procedure.
Otaigbe speaks from personal experience, as she has had CoolSculpting done herself. “There is almost nothing I offer that I haven’t tried myself because I want to know what it feels like,” she said.
The procedure takes about an hour per treatment area. CoolSculpting results are long-term, as treated fat cells are gone for good. This procedure is perfect for those who are close to their ideal weight and have specific areas that they wish to target.
Vampire Facelift Minimally Invasive, Erases Wrinkles Without Excess Fillers
It’s the buzz of Hollywood, and despite its scary-sounding name, the Vampire Facelift actually is very safe.
The procedure gets its name from the fact that doctors use your own blood and inject it back into fine lines and wrinkles. Using a small amount of filler such as Juvaderm, the real magic comes from the client’s very own blood.
The doctor isolates platelets from the blood after removing about two teaspoons from the body. The separation occurs in just 10 minutes in a centrifuge. Then, the platelet rich plasma (PRP) is injected into the wrinkle. Using a sort of “scaffolding” provided by the filler, the PRP stimulates the growth of collagen naturally, creating a smoother face and a healthy glow.
Dr. Otaigbe actually was trained on this procedure by Dr. Charles Runels, who invented it.
Using the Rejuvapen microneedling device, Radiant Reflections is able to offer minimally invasive skin resurfacing procedures to treat wrinkles, acne scarring and other skin imperfections. This can be done using the microneedling device along with PRP or specially formulated peptides.
Radiant Reflections also offers Botox® and Xeomin® for treatment of lines and wrinkles.
Elos Plus™, More Than Just a Laser, Effective on Skin of Color, Too
When it comes to removing spider veins, age spots, unwanted hair, or just tightening the skin, Dr. Otaigbe’s Elos Plus workstation offers cutting-edge technology.
Using a combination of optical energy, such as a laser or light, along with radio frequency, Elos Plus can heat the skin without damaging it. That means procedures can be performed even on people of color, whereas conventional methods did not work very well.
Losing Weight: Often the Required First Step Toward Looking, Feeling Great
Sometimes it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to have an aesthetic procedure performed if you haven’t first taken care of the overall business of good health, which often means weight loss.
Dr. Otaigbe and her staff can help with that too, offering medically supervised, tailor-made weight loss programs for the young and old, male and female alike. They educate their clients to change the way they look at the routines of daily life. That means developing habits that include eating right and exercise, as well as an understanding of overall health and how to achieve it.
Sometimes, medications or dietary supplements may be offered. Dr. Otaigbe’s office is able to dispense those on site. It is up to the physician to determine whether medications are necessary.
Blood will be drawn and taken to the lab to make sure the right weight loss plan is being prescribed in a safe and effective manner.
