"O-69,” calls Matt Rupert, official My Hope Bag bingo caller. “Ohhh 69,” the bingo players yell back. The night carries on with jokes and innuendos based off the letters and numbers called. Friends of My Hope Bag are gathering again for another Bingo for Boobies event. Each year the event sells out and supporters of My Hope Bag come from all across the state to have a night of fun. The event is designed to give education in a fun way that doesn’t feel like education at all. Sure, there are moments of seriousness when one is reminded to do a monthly self-exam. There are moments when everyone cries together at the triumphant tales of My Hope Bag recipients and that time they beat cancer. There are even moments that everyone tries to forget, like that one time the popcorn burnt on the rented popcorn machine that didn’t come with instructions. But the best part, the part that keeps people coming back year after year, is the moment that women forget they have breast cancer. They are surrounded in a room with other women who are in various stages of their breast cancer journey, as well as wonderful supporters, and they just feel so much strength as they sit next to someone who starts off as a stranger but leaves the night as friends for life. There are husbands who are there to support their wives in a night off the ‘breast cancer fighter’ clock. There are best friends and new friends—everyone is there to have a good time.
My Hope Bag started when Sarah Ellery went through her own personal breast cancer journey. She was determined to bring some joy and hope into the process that is normally so scary and sterile. My Hope Bag’s purpose is to deliver bags of comfort items to women at any stage of their journey focusing on women in Arizona. Not only do they get the bag, they get friends for life. Whether it’s Sarah herself or another Hope Sister who delivers the bag, the Hope Sisters check in with the recipient throughout her journey and are by her side when she needs someone to lean on. Someone who has been in her shoes.
Net proceeds from this year’s FUNdraiser will go towards My Hope Bag’s Free Mammograms for Uninsured Women program. Mammograms will go through Solis Mammography—a 100 percent Breast-Dedicated Team with four Valley locations. For more information, contact email@example.com.
