Reflections Memory Care is a premier retirement facility in Chatham that opened in October 2014. It specializes in providing state-of-the-art care for people with Alzheimer’s disease, and other conditions of diminished memory. It offers all-inclusive, individualized healthcare plans in a secure building with a medically- qualified staff.

“We are a family-owned and operated community care facility tailored to residents’ individual needs,” says Patrick Lam, Reflections’ Executive Director. “Our staff is well-trained, compassionate, and incredibly caring with residents. We feel that residents have had their time to take care of the younger generation, and now it is our turn to take care of them. They deserve to be treated with utmost respect and dignity. Family members have placed them here, trusting us to provide the best care possible, and we must live up to their expectations,” said Patrick, who has been involved in the community home care industry for more than three years, and in the health care field for more than 10 years.

Reflections’ management team is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The facility has a total of 48 beds. It is specifically equipped to assist those who are experiencing confusion, wandering, sun downing, disorientation, and loss of recognition of familiar faces and tasks. “We want to channel behaviors into something positive, and to connect with residents in the moment—so that we can make every moment possible a meaningful one,” stated Patrick.

All staff is trained in the concept of ability-focused activities to provide an environment that minimizes unhealthy effects of the memory loss process. While abilities may diminish, residents’ desire to succeed does not and, for that reason, Reflections encourages an active lifestyle with programs designed to allow residents to succeed. The skilled team does this by emphasizing residents’ individual strengths so that they each have a chance to maintain their dignity.

Reflections strives to be innovative in helping its residents cope with dementia. It focuses on areas of personal wellness: emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, and purposeful. To that end, they engage in a range of special events and group activities, including arts, crafts, music therapy, and social interactions. One of its signature therapies, sensory stimulation, is a fairly new approach; it helps to control uncomfortable feelings that a person with dementia may experience. It uses objects that will reach one or more of the five senses: sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Research has proven that a person with dementia will react positively to a certain object or when a specific activity is performed. This therapy is known to improve moods, decrease negative thoughts, and offer feelings of safety—and trigger memories. The sensory room includes music, special lighting, aromatherapy, tactile objects, and much more.

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias create a difficult and challenging journey. The Reflections’ team helps residents and families through each stage of the disease process. The specialty environment, joyful moments program, and fully trained staff help acclimate residents quickly. The individualized versus group approach helps identify each resident’s strengths, so that life has purpose and positive experiences.

“Our hand-in-hand training course is part of the initial employee orientation,” says Patrick. “Staff learns how to treat the resident as a whole, using a social model, not the typical medical model. Staff recognizes that Alzheimer’s and other dementias may include behavior issues, such as wandering, combativeness, verbal outbursts, and repetition.”

If you have a loved one who requires Alzheimer’s or memory care, Reflections’ trained staff will meet with you and the prospective resident to carry out a one-on-one assessment in the comfort of his or her own home. If the prospective resident meets the requirements of the Illinois Department of Public Health, the team will assist the family and begin paper work to accept the person into the facility.

“You can feel positive that your loved one’s medical needs will be met, and rest assured that we will treat your family like our own. Together, hand-in-hand, we will walk you through this disease,” states Patrick. “We are an assisted living facility where we welcome family members to come and visit relatives, or take them on outings. We have an open door policy. If there are ever any concerns, members of the administrative and management team can be contacted at any time of the day or night.

“If you ask family members of our residents firsthand of their experiences at Reflections, they will recommend us highly. We don’t see Reflections as a nursing home, but as a home away from home for all our residents.”
