Working with the community... for a healthier community.

Life Begins at Retirement

  November 07, 2019

Some people are fond of stating that we spend a third of our lives sleeping. What hardly anybody ever mentions is we spend nearly another third of our lives working.

Retirement then becomes a sort of end goal for most. It is a time to make up for all of those years spent merely trying to survive and becomes, instead, a time to actually start living life to the fullest.

For those who see retirement in that light, Aspens Active Adult Communities is happy to add The Aspens at Mariposa Point to their family of communities.

Aspens’ Purpose
“Aspens Senior Living was founded as a solution for the wide gap in affordability in the typical offerings in seniors housing,” says Aspens co-owner, Barry Metcalf. “The middle-class segment of the senior demographic is mostly neglected; they do not qualify to live in low-income senior communities, but cannot afford—or do not want to afford—traditional independent living. At Aspens Senior Living, it is our mission to make it possible for seniors to experience a seamless transition to luxurious, maintenance-free living where seniors may thrive.”

Barry Metcalf, owner of Aspens Senior Living and and Matt Johnson, owner of Surpass Senior Living (who also manages The Aspens), know that seniors have different needs and desires in a community, so there is no one-size-fits-all approach. “Our focus at The Aspens communities is to provide optionality to our residents so they may select services and amenities that fit their lifestyle and budget,” Barry adds. “Whether all a resident needs is an apartment or wants to add on our à la carte services and amenities like dining, weekly housekeeping, scheduled transportation and more, Aspens communities allow residents to create a customized plan that suits their needs.”

“Additionally, The Aspens takes pride in thoughtfully curating events and activities with our residents’ interests in mind—focusing on crafting opportunities for seniors to be active in our community, make new friends, and experience new adventures,” he concludes. “Gilbert is a high-growth area in the greater Phoenix MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) that possesses great qualities through its strong population and income metrics. The combination of in-migration from adult children and seniors are also facets of Gilbert that allow The Aspens at Mariposa Point to be successful and serve the community’s seniors.”

Active Living, Actively Saving
Many people still carry a preconceived notion that retirement communities are all sleepy places filled with equally sleepy seniors. Leslie A. Davis, Executive Director of The Aspens at Mariposa Point, says active adult living has only a little in common with those other communities.

“Activities can be different in an active adult community versus independent living,” she begins. “More outings, daytrips, educational classes, exercise classes, attendance of sporting and cultural events, resident-run activities, etc. Onsite, we’ll have life-long learning classes taught by area professors, exercise classes like yoga, Zumba, and water aerobics as well as billiards and so much more.”

In addition to all of the on-site activities that will be scheduled by a full-time dedicated Lifestyle Director, The Aspen’s is just a short drive from the Santan Village shopping center with apparel and sporting shops, multiple restaurants, a Harkin’s theater and a Barnes & Noble. There are nearby golf courses, walking, biking and hiking trails and Gilbert is full of cultural venues like the historic Hale Theatre and old town Gilbert with local favorite, Joe’s BBQ, amongst others.

Actively Social
So, if an adult is still active, healthy, and quite capable of living on one’s own, why move to The Aspens?

One key benefit is socialization, as it impacts all areas of our life,” says Leslie. “Particularly for people living alone; perhaps their spouse died and they’re now living all alone. This is where communal living is of great benefit. Additionally, they can free up the equity they have in their home, reinvest it, and then have the flexibility to travel, etc.”

Should a resident not suffer from wanderlust, there are numerous amenities at Aspens to keep one occupied day in and day out, most of which embrace the socialization aspect of community living: a year-round heated outdoor pool, BBQ area, library, fitness center, theatre, billiards/game room, and an on-site salon.

Of course, even the most social of butterflies sometimes needs some alone time. Within Aspens’ luxury apartments of varying sizes and layouts are fully equipped kitchens, full-size side-by-side washer dryer units, and patio/balconies. Plus, there is covered parking (a necessity under the Arizona sun), garages, and extra indoor storage space for rent.

As Barry Metcalf explained, residents can always add on things to their Aspens living experience to make life just a little bit easier. A daily continental breakfast or catered lunch buffet may be just that thing and a resident can add them on at any time. But again, if you don’t want those options then you don’t have to pay for them.

Meals are far from the only services available to residents. There are also errand companies, food delivery, dog grooming (as pets are, of course, welcome), medical services such as home health care and physical therapy. And should one have an out-of-state visitor, there is a guest apartment available for rent, as well as extra laundry rooms on each floor.

There are plenty of friends to be had down every hall. “It’s so much easier to get involved socially when you’re right on-site where the activities are happening,” says Leslie. “Many won’t drive over to the clubhouse in their active adult neighborhood, but they will walk down the hall in an apartment setting to join an activity. It’s just less intimidating and being in closer proximity you get to know your neighbors so much easier.”

Plus, that close proximity to neighbors has the added benefit of making many residents feel that much safer.

Only a Moment Away
Unfortunately, even healthy, active lives are sometimes visited by illness or an injury. Fortunately, The Aspens at Mariposa Point subscribes to the most important rule of real estate: location is everything.

“The Aspens is right across the street from Mercy Gilbert Medical Center, specialists in neurology and cardiology, a blood lab, physical therapy, dermatologists, two cancer centers, etc.,” Leslie says. “So for those acute situations where timing is of the essence (i.e. heart attack or stroke), help is only moments away.”

Of course a heart attack or a stroke can certainly lead to making a permanent alteration to, perhaps, a slightly less active lifestyle. Should any form of home healthcare or continued therapy be needed, those caregivers are welcome at The Aspens. “These services would be scheduled and paid for by the resident and may or may not be covered by insurance,” Leslie adds.

Should independent living no longer be viable, a resident need not even leave the neighborhood. “If a resident needs long term care,” she continues, “they can move to assisted living with 24/7 caregivers at Mariposa Point of Gilbert—right across the parking lot from The Aspens.”

Having such a next-door neighbor means the separation that often accompanies declining health need not be an issue anymore. “We will have a husband or wife who has their spouse over at Mariposa Point—typically in the memory care section—or a couple whose parents are over in the assisted living and they will be welcome to walk over there for a meal or have their loved ones to their Aspens apartment,” Leslie assures.

The Best Medicine
It has been said laughter is the best medicine, but the “medicine” doctors truly prescribe more than any other is activity. Living an active lifestyle has been proven to not only invigorate the body, but the mind and spirit as well.

At The Aspens, the opportunities abound to follow doctors’ advice on a daily basis. It is the place for anyone seeking safety, comfort, luxury, fitness, entertainment, new experiences, a continuity of learning, fun, and friendship.

In short, The Aspens at Mariposa Point is the home for those seeking to finally put that labor-and-work third of their lives behind them and to finally just live.
