A family business
Koelsch Communities have been family owned and operated for three generations, developing and operating senior living communities that offer distinctive independent living, assisted living, and memory care — and they are continually thinking of new ways to raise the bar in the world of senior living.
Today, the Koelsch family business has grown to be vastly different from where it started 60 years ago, yet it’s still very much the same — anchored on the same values — but offering its residents more than ever before.
If you visit a Koelsch Community — for example The Park at Copper Creek, an independent-living community that opens in Chandler in a couple months — you’ll experience a world of senior living you never knew existed. Koelsch is taking a multi-faceted approach in how they design communities, everything from the architecture to the fine dining, and the result is a new breed of luxurious senior living.
Koelsch has an exclusive partnership with JSK Design to craft their communities with the refinement and elegance you would experience at a five-star resort — picturesque environments, beautiful apartment design, inviting pools, gardens, all surrounded by beautiful lighting and architecture.
Walt Disney said, “The magic is in the details,” and Koelsch Communities has applied that to their communities — cuisine being a perfect example. Koelsch recently signed an exclusive contract with world-renowned chef, Darren McGrady, who was chef to Queen Elizabeth II; Diana, Princess of Wales; and Princes William and Harry for fifteen years; and has cooked for five US Presidents.
McGrady is currently working with Koelsch culinary leadership to craft menu items to be featured at communities like The Park at Copper Creek. Koelsch Communities want all of their residents to feel like royalty, and though they are always finding new ways to serve their residents, Koelsch Communities is rooted on the same values it was 60 years ago.
Our roots run deep
Today, Koelsch Communities offers the pinnacle of senior living, but when 17-year-old Emmett Koelsch left his father’s farm in Great Bend, Kansas in 1938 with only the clothes in his suitcase, all he knew was that he was heading west to make a future for himself.
Soon, Emmett Koelsch met Alice Shultz, and they married and started a family. After Emmet returned from World War II, the family purchased the Monticello Hall in 1958, and opened the community with their four children living in the basement. This was their first chance to embed their family values into their livelihood.
Emmet and Alice made a commitment to set the Monticello Hall apart, not only by the superior services they would provide, but by the way they treated their residents. This was no small task. Emmett and Alice’s commitment has evolved into the Koelsch Common Purpose, the Core Values, and the Quality Standards that are the cornerstones of Koelsch Communities today.
As the years trickled by, Koelsch employees showed up to work in bell-bottoms and Volkswagens. Then, in airplane-collared shirts with disco-soundtracks emanating from their 8-Track players. Soon, Koelsch Communities had survived Y2K and emerged into an America flooded with social-media-driven Millennials. As each decade came and went, there stood Koelsch Communities, humbly outlasting the popular fads and trends that took our nation by storm. So, how is it Koelsch has outlasted so many popular movements?
According to Aaron Koelsch, CEO and Founder of Koelsch Communities, “The Koelsch core values are what make us so sought after amongst seniors and their families. We offer residents a home built on the same values, morals, and ethics that they raised their families on, and that holds immeasurable worth in our industry.”
The Koelsch difference
As family businesses in America continue to adapt to current times, Koelsch Communities remains committed to upholding the values that have carried it thus far.
Koelsch now serves over 2,300 residents and employs over 1,700 staff members, with clusters of communities in Washington, Arizona, California, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Montana, and Idaho.
One thing Koelsch Communities is especially proud of is their uniquely high employee retention rate. Koelsch believes a huge reason for high employee retention rate is due to instilling the “Koelsch Core Values” into new employees. With an open focus on company values, it’s not surprising the Koelsch company has done an admirable job of attracting employees who align with the companies values.
Aaron Koelsch commented, “I can’t see what the future holds, but I know that adhering to the values this company was built on is what got us here. That’s why those values are more important to me than ever before and why Koelsch Communities strives to instill them in anyone who serves a Koelsch Community resident.”
Some might attribute Koelsch’s 60-year legacy in senior living to their business tactics, but Aaron Koelsch will tell you, “Sound business planning is one thing — and we’re not the only senior living provider whose shown we can grow a business — the Koelsch difference is built on how we serve and treat the people who choose to live with us.
“What does the family with an aging parent needing assistance care about? What about the couple who is looking for luxury senior living?
“They care about knowing how they, or their loved one, will be treated in a Koelsch Community. And that’s why our Koelsch Common Purpose is ‘Creating happiness by proving the finest living experiences anywhere.’”
If you are curious about The Koelsch Core Values the family attributes their growing success to, they are as follows:
