That is the philosophy that our residents, Wes Pierce and his wife Martha live by. Back in 1998, these two love birds retired and wanted to do something that offers food, fun, and fellowship. And that’s just what they did.
Wes and Martha approached the Pastor that was opening Arizona Community Church in Tempe to ask about creating a group that targeted seniors. They pre-marketed the program while the church was being built and had 23 attendees by the second meeting. Wes and Martha were the Directors for eight years. During their tenure, they arranged many exciting annual trips where they traveled the world to include trips to Israel, Greece, Alaska, Hawaii, and Germany just to name a few. They also arranged local trips to places like Flagstaff and Tucson. They went to baseball games, theaters, museums, and did all sorts of fun stuff that Phoenix has to offer. This program spawned off so many wonderful friendships for them and everyone else that joined. IN-Joy! is still going strong today with 250 members.
Martha is proud to say she is still working as an assistant and they both attend as members today. Martha and Wes met back in a singles sunday school class at Grace Community Church back in 1977 where they were assigned as prayer partners. Martha was sweet on Wes and was excited when he asked her out to go to an ASU Football game. It wasn’t long before Wes took Martha to the Grand Canyon and proposed to her.
December 23, 1978 started their lifelong journey together. Not too long ago while visiting their summer home in Flagstaff, Wes had a fall which ultimately landed him in the hospital and then rehab. While Wes was in rehab, Martha came to Hawthorn Court to visit a friend who had recently moved in. While Martha was here, we engaged in a conversation about our community and I showed her around, including an apartment we had available. She was telling me a little bit about her husband and it sounded like this might be a good fit for him. Martha brought Wes in to the community the next day and after touring the community and meeting a few residents, Wes said “well, this is a no brainer!”
He and Martha both believe this was a Godsend. He enjoys it here every day—he says it’s a “breath of fresh air.” Besides Martha’s daily visits, Wes looks forward to the engagement of various activities including the lunch outings and music entertainment and the fact he doesn’t have to do a thing (cook or clean). Wes and Martha recently celebrated with a 20/40/80 party (20 years of IN-Joy!, 40 years of marriage, and turning 80). Wes got the red-carpet treatment and 220 people attended the celebration! These two are such a sweet couple and we are so blessed they are a part of our community.
