It’s that time of year again. The Affordable Care Act enrollment period to get covered for 2018 is November 1 through December 15, 2017. Some may notice this is six weeks shorter than in previous years. It is very important that people purchase their health insurance during this time.
The ACA Signup Project, a grassroots effort in all 50 states, was recently organized to promote the enrollment period and to help connect consumers to those who can assist them in getting signed up for health insurance plans. Volunteers are mobilizing in McLean County to get the word out.
In the past, the federal government spent millions of dollars to promote the ACA enrollment period. This year, however, the current administration has cut the advertising budget. Last year it was $100 million. This year, it’s only $10 million. The government has also slashed funding that went to navigators around the country. These navigators worked for nonprofit organizations, to get people enrolled in insurance plans. At press time, information was still being confirmed as to how many navigators will be available in McLean County to assist area residents.
The ACA Signup Project has no budget to advertise the enrollment period. Volunteers will be distributing flyers throughout McLean County, hosting navigator training events and insurance enrollment events. Volunteers will also be talking to organizations, businesses, local media, and others about the ACA and the enrollment period. Be on the lookout for us!
