Community and Care in a Hometown Setting

The Assisted Lifestyle at Villas Senior Care Community in Sherman is one of a kind. The Assisted Lifestyle community provides what is known as “sheltered living”, and is part of the larger Villas Senior Care Community, that also provides skilled nursing care, therapy services and independent living. The approach at the Assisted Lifestyle community does things a little differently for its residents.
Donna Heneghan, administrator of the Villas Senior Care Community Assisted Lifestyle, elaborates on what the “sheltered living” appellation means,“…it’s somewhere between assisted living and skilled nursing care… It’s a happy medium.” Sheltered living is a sound choice for seniors with persistent medical needs, but who are still mostly independent. Sheltered living staffs CNAs and LPNs around the clock, all week long for residents with conditions that need skilled monitoring or medical care. The medical staff at a sheltered living community is also licensed to dispense medications for residents, like insulin injections, instead of being limited to medication reminders. The center also employs its own medical director to oversee healthcare services, so there is no need for residents to schedule off-site appointments for regular medical needs, and the independent medical lab that is contracted by the Center allows for prompt test results without having to work around the demands of a large medical network partner. In addition to medical services, the center also offers its own therapy center, where residents can improve their physical, occupational, and speech health without leaving the campus.
Of the 113 licensed beds available at Villas Senior Care Community (VSCC) Assisted Lifestyle, 100 of them are spacious private accommodations. Residents may select from four unique apartment floor plan styles as their new home. Each apartment is equipped with a private restroom with an emergency call switch. Utilities, maintenance, laundry, housekeeping, nursing and activities are all included at an affordable flat, monthly rate. If you have a special, furry friend, they’re welcome to join you in your new home. At VSCCAssisted Lifestyle there are NO unexpected service fees associated with any of the special services and amenities they offer.
With a broad offering of on-site amenities, residents can enjoy a retirement full of engaging activities, while receiving expert medical care and attention. Of course, food tops the list of offerings. Providing three meals a day and a choice of entrees at lunch, the dining services also boasts salad and dessert carts, along with an always-available menu for when the need to snack can’t be ignored. The cafe offers coffee, hot chocolate, tea, and snacks, no matter the hour. Donna laughs after reciting the long list of dining options, “We have a saying here, if you come here and leave hungry, there must be something wrong with you!”
Dining may be one of the most-loved offerings here, but they offer many more amenities for those looking for an active retirement. Almost all sections of the building are wireless equipped for tech-savvy seniors with two public access computers for managing personal affairs and catching up with family and friends. The on-site beauty and barbershop keeps residents looking snazzy, and the family and private party room gives residents a place to host their own events. An in-house library is the perfect complement to the peaceful location. The game room keeps residents happy with entertainment and fellowship over games of Bingo, dice games, playing cards or whatever the fun game of the day is. The community is also home to a live-in chaplain who ministers to the spiritual needs of the residents. Regular musical activities and guests are highly popular with residents, the grand piano in the dining room gives musically inclined seniors a chance to tickle the ivories. Residents aren’t just limited to participating in in-house entertainment and activities, they have access to the wider community as well through regular off-campus outings. The community of Sherman itself could be considered an amenity of the VSCC Assisted Lifestyle as well. Although located roughly nine miles away from Springfield, Sherman is a small, cozy town of just a few more than 4,000 residents. Residents can enjoy frequent trips to local restaurants and diners or enjoy the historical museums and beautiful parks in the area. Being so close to Springfield, they offer access to all of the attractions and services of a larger city, while being nestled in a quiet, peaceful small town setting.
Of all the long list of reasons to consider the Assisted Lifestyle at VSCC, a common thread winds through Donna’s explanations: community. From her especially high praise of the local firefighters and the police of the community, to the way she talks about the center’s residents and staff, close relationships seem to be the core of their mission. She explains that the original offerings at The Villas Senior Care Community began as a mission of compassion, being founded by a local priest, and continues to be a place where care is at the forefront. From the board of directors populated by long time veterans of the healthcare and long-term care industry, to the staff that volunteered to sleep over at the facility when snow hit Sherman hard, there seems to be no end to the anecdotes with care as their motif. This theme is reinforced by the employment records of many of the employees — a number of the staff have tenured at the building for at least a decade; some employees have doubled that investment in time.
