The Claiborne sees — and affordably fills — a community need.
Usually, a master-planned community is about the developers’ plans for the property and its future. In the case of The Claiborne at Hattiesburg, it’s also about residents’ plans for their own future. Recognizing a need for active aging, the Tatum family of Hattiesburg set out to develop a property that would focus on health and community, offering a new option in retirement living. In doing so, they surpassed every benchmark in the region’s offerings for retirement living—including independent living, assisted living and memory care. The result is a true neighborhood of some 30 acres with resort-level amenities, a high standard of care and a full range of living options, including cottages and apartments.
“Hattiesburg is ranked one of the top places to retire in the country, and we didn’t have a true campus facility suited for that purpose,” said Rob Tatum of CR Properties, owner and developer of The Claiborne. “We saw a need in our community and set out to meet that need.” With the continuum of care offered, residents of The Claiborne do not have to face a series of moves if their needs change. From independent living cottages and apartments to assisted living and memory care, The Claiborne provides personalized care plans to ensure the best in active aging.
The first step in this project was the construction of the assisted living and memory care facilities, along with 12 independent living cottages. The 70,000 square-foot facility welcomed its first residents in mid-October. “One of the best features of this building is that there’s a lot of space built in to encourage relationships, socialization and activities,” said Glenn Barclay, chief executive officer of The Blake Management Group, which manages the facility.
“There are courtyards and patios, a library, theatre, and coffee shop, along with numerous other common areas to help keep the residents active and engaged.”
The next phase at The Claiborne is the completion of 132 independent living apartments, expected in summer 2015. This, along with the independent living cottages, offers an entirely different style of living for area retirees. “This development provides a great opportunity for interaction with neighbors, offering socializing opportunities and the chance to make new friends of the same age with the same interests,” said Molly Daniels, director of independent living. “So many of our residents are so excited to get out from under their mortgage, property taxes, and homeowners insurance,” said Daniels, “not to mention the luxury of having a weekly housekeeper and regular lawn maintenance.”
The independent living apartments and cottages are a first in Hattiesburg. Cottages feature two- and three-bedroom plans with attached two-car garages, along with spacious kitchens and living areas designed for comfortable entertaining. Apartments are available in five large floor plans with one- and two-bedroom options, each with a fully equipped kitchen and laundry room with washer/dryer connections. Apartments also feature private patios for enjoying the wooded landscape surrounding Timberton Golf Club and Tatum Park. In addition, construction of the 10,000-square-foot clubhouse will be complete in the coming months and will include a putting green, bocce ball court, and outdoor swimming pool.
With the assisted living facility, residents have the freedom to pursue new goals, knowing that assistance is available when needed. The highly trained care team at The Claiborne works to ensure that every resident is engaged with their fully personalized health and wellness plan, created with input from the resident and their loved ones. Residents enjoy a full complement of amenities and activities, and can choose from four spacious floor plans with luxurious, traditional architectural details.
Another key component to the continuum of care offered at The Claiborne is the memory care facility, which provides residential and respite care for those with memory-related diseases, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. In 24 memory care apartments, The Claiborne provides a safe, secure environment and a comfortable place to call home. To give residents confidence in identifying their individual residence, hallways feature color-coded doors and glass-fronted “memory boxes” displaying personal items such as family photos. “When they move in, they can fill their memory box with items and images that define home for them,” Barclay said. The staff works with families to create a detailed care plan that follows the resident’s medical, physical and social needs. This plan is supported by a team of some 35 dedicated caregivers, including dining staff, concierge, wellness staff, nurses, assistants, and housekeepers.
All residents enjoy a full-time activity director to organize entertainment, group games, exercise, and other events built to engage residents and foster social, emotional and physical well-being. “Often our residents go to a local studio for ballroom dancing, as well as art classes and tailgating events they can enjoy together,” says Daniels. Other amenities include a beautiful restaurant-style dining room with courtyard views, an outdoor swimming pool, well-equipped fitness center open 24 hours, group fitness classes including water exercise, chair aerobics and a walking club, as well as an on-site general store with a full-service pharmacy and salon located in the clubhouse. “Staying active and engaged,” Daniels said, “is at the heart of this master plan.”
